Strawberry Banana Green Smoothie

This blog post has been a long time coming! I have played with the idea of starting a blog for years. The idea of a blog has taken many forms, but I have settled on Chelsea’s Kitchen. Atlas, here it is!

One of the top questions that I get during my day job is “what should I eat for breakfast?” So as my first post ever, I bring to you a strawberry banana green smoothie. I love this smoothie because it combines protein, fiber, and fat which makes it extremely satisfying. It’s quick and easy to prepare for busy mornings.

One of the biggest issues that I would have with smoothies is that they did not keep me full. I would be hungry two hours after drinking a smoothie for breakfast. I always made an effort to add protein, but it did not matter how much Greek yogurt or protein powder I would add.

Also, I would find that adding too many greens to a smoothie would leave the smoothie with a gritty feeling.

Enter adding avocado.

I have to say, I was apprehensive to add avocado to a drink. I love avocado in any other format, but the idea of drinking avocado was not appealing. I was pleasantly surprised that adding avocado does not make the smoothie taste like guacamole. Instead, it adds a rich creaminess to the smoothie and a bonus of emulsifying everything. Don’t be afraid to blend the smoothie for an extra minute or two to really get everything incorporated.

This strawberry banana green smoothie includes a full serving of vegetables, a full 2 cups of spinach! It also has two servings of fruit with a half a banana (added creaminess!) and a cup of strawberries. The best thing about this smoothie is that all of these ingredients can be put in a quart freezer bag and frozen for an even faster breakfast. Just don’t forget to label your freezer bag with the type of smoothie and the date. When I’m ready to make breakfast, I just dump the bag into the blender, add my almond milk and Greek yogurt and go.

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 3/4 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1 cup strawberries fresh with tops removed or frozen
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 small avocado

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in the blender. It helps place the spinach in first, followed by the heavier ingredients. This helps to incorporate all the ingredients faster.
  • Blend until smooth, about 2 minutes.
  • Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Notes

If you would like to make the smoothie sweeter, add a tablespoon of honey (this will add sugar). Or use a packet or two of your favorite alternative sweetener for a sugar free option.
